- The student track is now sold out. If want to go, you have to sign up at the practitioner rate.
- OTSC T-Shirt Designs
- Faculty found some designs concerning. Need to get permission if we’re ever going to use pictures of faculty. We need to be professional about what we send out.

- OT Global Day of Service-- Oct. 27th
- For more information, check out http://promotingot.org/global-day-of-service
- Questions for faculty regarding listservs
- We will be able to send out OTSC announcements and events to OT students through listservs. If we’re communicating with other divisions, use Facebook.
- New: Latino Occupational Therapy Association
- Falls under OTSC umbrella. First meeting was October 6, 2014.
- LOTA is open to all students! They’re currently working on membership and recruitment to increase diversity within the division.
- They will be participating in community events (dates to come). One proposed event is Spanish Night where students can practice speaking spanish with peers and faculty.
- Smoking Cessation Program
- The program is run by pharmacy students and they would like OT students to be involved. OT students would be addressing stress/anxiety and exercise for older adults with limited mobility and limited resources. We would be conducting educational sessions, that would include.
- Dates: 10/14, 11/18, 10/08, 10/15, 10/29. All from 5:30-6:30 pm. You do not need to commit to all dates.
- This opportunity is open to all students. Karen will discuss this opportunity with classmates to see if anyone’s interested.
Council Items:
1) AOTA (Phillip & Ann):
Discussion:
- Represent USC within AOTA by applying to its Steering Committee! Ann and I are USC’s representatives to AOTA’s Assembly of Student Delegates (ASD), its “OTSC” equivalent. Become a student leader within AOTA by being part its Steering Committee, a leadership subgroup within the AOTA’s Assembly of Student Delegates.
- The Steering Committee acts as the link between all OT schools and AOTA’s board members. For instance, in September, members of the Steering Committee discussed our profession’s anticipated transition to the OTD requirement via conference call with AOTA President Dr. Ginny Soffel, AOTA Vice President Dr. Amy Lamb, and other OT leaders within AOTA.
- Collaborate with your classmates in applying for these open positions on the Steering Committee:
- Assembly of Student Delegates (ASD) Chairperson
- OT Vice Chairperson (ASD)
- OTA Vice Chairperson (ASD)
- Secretary (ASD)
- Commission on Practice (COP) Student Representative (ASD)
- Communication & Advocacy Chairperson (ASD)
- Apply here: http://www.aota.org/students.aspx. Deadline is mid October. Contact philip with any questions.
- Read the student handbook that I recently finished co-writing with other Steering Committee members: http://www.aota.org/-/media/Corporate/Files/AboutAOTA/Governance/ASD/DelegateHandbook.pdf
2) Faculty Liaison (Kristy & Doug):
Update:
- NEW! Suggestion Box now online!! View it here http://chan.usc.edu/academics/student-organizations/otsc/feedback
- Note: If you’re having a problem with a specific instructor, please discuss this with the instructor directly.
- Please encourage your classmates to share any feedback or suggestions they may have. This gives them an option to submit anonymously if they do not want to email the faculty liaisons directly. Also, remember that this information is confidential. If you see a suggestion in the OTSC gmail account, please do not open it.
3) Fundraising (Lori & Amy):
Discussion:
- T-shirt design contest
- Top 2 colors for T-shirts: charcoal and black. Most popular styles: short sleeves and V necks.
- An email with approved T-shirt designs will be sent out soon.
4) GSG Senator (Cindy & Patience):
Update:
- Nothing of interest to report this week. Next Senate meeting is on Monday, October 13th.
5) Historian (Leila & Heather):
Update:
- We still need to come up with a good time to take the cohort photos. We will need a representative from each cohort to help facilitate this.
- We are also looking into making a yearbook through shutterfly. If we find inexpensive options, we may also do the calendar idea through shutterfly.
6) International Affairs (Monica & Sarah):
Discussion:
- Sarah has met with Prof. Eggleston on the UPC campus, and learned about an OT from Wales who is planning to visit in Nov/Dec. Would we like to invite him to speak to students here?
- How do people feel about inviting the MAI students to give informal lunch-time talks about the practice of OT in their own countries? Or perhaps a one-time MAI “lunchtime panel”?
- There was discussion about how a “lunchtime panel” may be the best option.
- Update: We are tentatively planning to have the international forum in late March so that newly-admitted students can also participate.
- Update: We are also partnering with LOTA to plan an Occupations in Spanish lunch session, date TBA
7) OTAC (Carlos & Jodie):
Discussion:
- Will be working on creating an OTAC one page handout about the benefits of joining the OTAC and our lack of numbers. The handout provides visual information about lack of OTAC membership. Handout will be created for students to give to clinical instructors, particularly those who are not members. Should OTAC Reps go into big classrooms to talk about handout or choose one member per cohort?
- One member per cohort will be chosen to discuss the handout with their class.
- Handout will be done by next meeting.
- Upcoming OTAC fundraiser in January, possibly a statewide event at California Pizza Kitchen.
- OTAC Annual Conference October 16th-19th, 2014
- Student track now sold out. If you would like to attend, provider tickets are still available.
Update:
- Successful OTAC info session with Dr. Rice and Dr. Rafeedie. Thanks to those who joined and supported us.
- OTAC Flash is out for month of October. Take a look!

- Tailgate with pharmacy for USC vs. Colorado game: Saturday, 10/18
13) Treasurer (Molly & Maybelle):
Discussion:
- Answers from last meeting:
- New organizations can either ask for funds from OTSC or they can also ask for a max of $2500 directly from GSG. It depends on whether OTSC is willing to grant them the requested amount of umbrella funds. As umbrella though new organizations will still need to get the GSG finance directors approval to use funds. Also, new organizations under OTSC must be recognized by campus affairs and have attended the finance orientation to request funds directly from GSG.
- We have communicated with both Engage and PTE. They both attended the finance meeting separately from OTSC and, therefore, apply for separate funds.
- Reminders:
- All funding opportunities will come to a vote before council, please allow at least 2 weeks
- Please submit all receipts to Jordi and a copy (or photo) of receipts to Maybelle and Molly
- Please plan ahead- unanticipated costs are not budget friendly
- Most funding is done through reimbursement instead of prospective payment
How does GSG funding work?
- If you want to receive funding from GSG for any event, please fill out the funding request form here:
- It takes approximately 4-5 weeks to obtain funding for events, so please submit the requests EARLY
- The Treasurer submits the proper forms to obtain the funding from GSG, other members do NOT do this, so please communicate with the treasurers to get your funding from any source
- If you need help finding a vendor (restaurant, office supply store, party store, etc.) for the items you need for the event, here is a list of commonly used, approved vendors by USC:
- If your vendor is NOT on the list, please let us know so we can contact purchasing and ask for approval or see if they are already on the vendor master list
