OTSC Meeting Agenda 4-15-13


Welcome to our last meeting of the year!


External Business:
  • Carly Wasserman will come to speak about OTAC and Habitat for Humanity
    • Working with Dr. Rafeedie partner OTAC with HfH; veteran's house-building day; $25 per person for a weekday, want to do it on Monday, May 13, need 5-6 students minimum, before end of semester
    • Will OTSC fund it? Department will not since it's a volunteer activity.
    • It's too  late to get funds from GSG
    • Maybe create a subcommittee that raises funds and donations for volunteer events
    • Fund ourselves this time, then make connections for next semester

Internal Business:

Recent Event Debrief
  • 127 Hours Movie Screening and California Pizza Kitchen Fundraiser - March 28th
    • $85 earned
    • faculty dinner on location, which helped raise funds
  • Faculty Dinner with Cermak, Clark, and Solomon- March 28
    • Fun, Dr. Clark loved it
  • OT Extravaganza- April 6th
    • 80-100 turned out
    • everyone enjoyed it, strong speakers
  • Relay for Life- April 6th
    • USC not as strong of a presence as other schools, but OT had a good representation
    • We were in 6th place in raising money, Ruth Zemke donated!
  • OTAC Region 2 AGAC 3rd Annual Legislative Reception - April 11
    • Not as many legislators themselves showed up
    • Great for making connections
  • International Forum- April 12th
    • 54 people showed up
    • Content worked well, tied in nicely
    • Had drop-off in attendance towards end
  • Interdisciplinary Mixer- April 12th
    • Pharmacy paid for appetizers
    • Fun
  • Swim with Mike- April 12th-13th
    • Swam from 5am Friday to 2pm Sunday
    • Had at least 2 people in water whole time

A Look Ahead at Important Events this Semester:
  • Lecture on OT/PT  in Oncology from Sherry Hite of City of Hope- April 22nd
    • 4:30-6pm in G37
    • PT is invited as well
  • AOTA Conference - April 25-28
    • Dr. Clark Thank you video in progress
  • May is Mental Health Month :) !
  • End of Year Celebration - Friday, May 10: Boat cruise out of Long Beach
  • Commencement - Friday, May 17

GRADUATING COUNCIL MEMBERS: Update your  “Council Duties by Position” Google Doc with your final contributions ASAP. Be sure to include:
  • Important dates/deadlines
  • Events related to your position
  • Names/phone numbers/email addresses of important contacts

Council Items:
At the meeting, each person please tell us something you are proud of accomplishing this year!

1) AOTA (Sean & Colin):
  • AOTA & USC Night RSVP reminder
  • AOTPAC - Gail Fisher (chair of AOTPAC) - wants to increase awareness and meet future leaders in the profession; asked us to stop by the AOTPAC booth and meet her
  • Dr. Clark video is in progress, won't be allowed to show it at AOTA but aim to have it completed by week after AOTA
  • Applications for emerging leaders program open today and due May 13th (for people in the last year of schooling/first 5 years of practice, mentor program, 2 days training at AOTA)

2) Faculty Liason (Jane & Jen S.):
  • There’s a faculty meeting Friday, April 19th where I will be encouraging the professors to purchase yearbooks and tickets for the boat cruise
  • Let us know if there is anything you would like us to bring up at the meeting since it’s the last one of the semester!

3) Fundraising Chairs (Kristina):
  • Raised $85.89 at California Pizza Kitchen
  • Last day of yearbook sales is Thursday, April 18th!
    • Yearbook Sales: Last day Monday, April 15th  in kitchen (CHP 139)  from 12-1pm
    • $32 per yearbook (cash or check made payable to Kristina Fender)

4) GSG Senator (Max & Casey):
  • Will receive budget updates next week (April 22nd) at last GSG senate meeting of the year
  • Upcoming GSG events:
What: GSG End-of-Spring Semester Happy Hour! Come enjoy the end of the semester with free food and great company!
Where: McKays, 3540 S Figueroa St
Date: Wednesday, April 24, 2013; 6-8PM

5) Historian (Steve & Amanda):
-Deadline to submit photos for the slideshow is April 19th.
-Projector for slideshow can be borrowed from the division as confirmed by John Wolcott.

6) International Affairs (Amy & Anastasia):
  • 54 people in attendance, including two students from LLU. We opened the day with every chair filled for our first presentation.
  • Post-Mortem debrief meeting for the International Forum will be conducted on Mon, April 22 from 12:00pm-1:00pm in CHP 109. Anyone involved in planning the event is welcome to come and contribute comments and suggestions.

7) OTAC Representative (Tara & Alyssa):
  • OTAC Flash issue2 printed and posted. Issue 3 in the works
  • Membership drive around the corner

8) OTD Representative (Bill):
  • Future fundraising source? http://www.cafepress.com/novo4ot This is a website that has a lot of OT products on sale, developed by my friend, Marie Sherwood, a soon to be graduating student from WMU. OT Merch website we can set up ourselves to sell stuff. great idea for next year.
9) OT House Liaison (Jen W.):
  • OTSC and OT House will co-sponsor a happy hour at beginning of summer for incoming OT students
  • Connected Alyssa, Jen, and erin with Beth for planning purposes
  • Incoming first years move-in on June 14th and classes begin June 17th

10) Philanthropy (Paula & Megan):
  • How do we want to get the word out early next year?  Perhaps an assembly announcing events that are already on the calendar (such as OT Global Day of Service!) so that we can invite fellow students outside of email to get involved and attend meetings if they’d like...?
  • suggests an assembly to gather students to introduce OTSC executive council and to events/opportunities


11) Professional Development (aka PDC) (Erin & Stacy):
  • We had the last faculty happy hour with Drs. Clark, Cermak, and Solomon.  It went great!  Thank you to everyone who has come to our faculty events!

12) Treasurer (Susan & Mazelle):
  • Don’t forget to email us with your End of Year Celebration ticket sales!!
  • We are working hard on the end of the year celebration! Let us know if you have any questions regarding funding or what you need to do to finance your event IN ADVANCE!

How does funding work?
  • If you want to receive funding for any event, please fill out the funding request form
  • It takes approximately 5 weeks to obtain funding for events, so please submit the requests EARLY
  • The Treasurer submits the proper forms to obtain the funding from GSG, other members do NOT do this, so please communicate with the treasurers to get your funding from any source
  • If you need help finding a vendor (restaurant, office supply store, party store, etc.) for the items you need for the event, here is a list of commonly used, approved vendors by USC:
