OTSC Meeting Agenda 11-04-13
Internal Business:
1. Last meeting of the semester is Monday, November 25th at 5:00 p.m. at Barbara's at the Brewery
2. “Council Duties by Position” Google Doc- Nov 4 deadline
- Please update this document from the OTSC Gmail account
- Include information so that someone who has no idea what your position does will be able to read the google doc and understand what to do. This will be helpful to use for future OTSC executive board members.
3. Recent Event Debrief
- OTAC Conference (10/25-10/27):
- Alyssa attended the Executive Board Committee meeting the Thursday before the OTAC Conference.
- The new co-chair of the committee (a USC alum) included the student delegates in the meeting, and a lot of connections were made with committee chairs to incorporate student delegates.
- OT Global Day of Service (10/27):
- Megan spoke about the seven events explaining that they are re-occurring events on a monthly basis
- Participation for OTs globally but to represent and educate about USC OT If attended any Global Day of Service event email Megan or Jonathan if you attended so they can ask for feedback about the events and improvements for next year
- Faculty Happy Hour at Barbara’s @ the Brewery (10/28):
- Karen and Stacy reported that 10-12 stdents and 3 professors attended the event.
- It went well, and everyone got a chance to talk to all three professors. Planning for more events next semester.
4. Effectiveness of OTSC Newsletter
- Suggestions for promoting upcoming events and getting information from exec council to division as a whole
- Send out after meeting with save the dates and information discussed at meetings
- Started last year to facilitate connection between OTSC exec board and the division (students and faculty)
- Feedback about effectiveness of this newsletter due to lack of attendance at events:
- Discussed using Facebook, posting it on the bathroom stall, in mailbox (paper copies), in-class announcements about upcoming events and opportunities for involvement
5. Committees
- Fundraising
- Kristina & Lori- about seven committee members on the Fundraising Committee
- International Forum (IF)
- Clara & Angela
- Kayla will be the co-chair contact person for the IF.
- End of the year party
- This year, social chairs (Clarissa & Kristin) will work with treasurers (Mazelle & Molly) and Yasi will be the co-chair contact person for the event.
- Fundraising will also be a part of this committee
- Scheduled for the last Friday of finals week in Spring Semester
6. Spring Meeting Dates (1/13- 5/2
External Business:
- More difficult to plan meeting and events due to 2nd years’ class schedules
- Even more important to have effective communication between 1st and 2nd years on the board.

Council Items:
1) AOTA (Colin & Phillip):
- Occupational Therapy Month in April: Continue brainstorming ideas
- Relay for Life
- Habitat for Humanity: Need a veteran willing to let house to be worked on by H4H.
- Important Events:
- Student Conclave: November 15 and 16 in Jacksonville, FL
- AOTA Elections - ASD Steering Comittee & General Elections, January 2014
- Specialty Conference - Adults with Stroke: December 6 and 7 in Las Vegas, NV
- A small conference focusing on occupational therapy’s unique contribution in the management of stroke, assessments and intervention approaches, evidence-based approach to treating stroke. Visit the AOTA web site for more information.
- Annual Conference & Expo: April 3 through April 6 in Baltimore, MD.
2) Faculty Liaison (Kristy & Jen S.):
- The suggestion box has been placed in the student mail room.
- Please encourage others to provide positive feedback or suggestions regarding classes, fieldwork, or the program.
3) Fundraising (Lori & Kristina):
- OT T-Shirt Designs
- Kristina announced the winning t-shirt design. It says “I heart OT.”
- Lori reported grey is the winning color, and she will keep us posted on the process.
4) GSG Senator (Cindy & Casey):
- Judiciary Committee
- 1. finalized a resolution to be presented to GSG for support of additional visas for graduate and professional students post-graduation.
- 2. preparing flyer for GSG highlighting how the Affordable Care Act affects graduate students.
- Upcoming events:
- Nov 8 - Movie Night at LA Live
- Nov 14 - HSC Thanksgiving Dinner at Seaver Cafe, 6PM
5) Historian (Leila & Amanda):
- Cohort group pictures (nice to have for the end of the year slideshow).
- Discussed and decided to set up a time during the week of Nov.18th-22nd for each cohort (1st & 2nd years).
6) International Affairs (Clara & Angela):
Discussion
- International Forum: Angela reported on plans for the upcoming IF.
- Date: Thursday, March 27 or ? No activities planned for that day yet, as per Kim.
- Time: 5:00-7:30/8:00 ?
- Location: Lifestyle Redesign at UPC; need to reserve with Jackie.
- Food: The co-chairs contacted Jeff Okita from Chewse. He estimates for “hardy appetizers” it would be about $8/pp ---> $400 estimate. Argentenian, Arabic, Ethiopian, Salads/Sandwiches
- Volunteers: 3 students have expressed interest.
- Speakers: Fulbright Scholar, MA-1 Student Panel, OTD Students (Erin & co)
- Follow-Up Questions:
- What about choosing a Friday?
- What about extending the time frame to include all of the events?
- What about working with the Global Initiative project?
7) MA-I Representative (Samar)
- MA-I students will participate in the international forum. Presentation format: ? PowerPoint or posters.
8) OTAC (Alyssa & Carlos):
- Recap from 2013 OTAC Conference in Sacramento; Governing Board Meeting, Advocacy Day, Networking and Sessions.
- Collaborating with delegates from other schools and committee members to make improvements to student track for 2014 OTAC Conference.
- Following up with students from other schools on OTAC Flash
9) OT House (Cindy)
- New OT House Liaison: Allison Daly
10) Philanthropy (Jonathan & Megan):
- OTGDS was another success! Thanks to all who participated. We are in process of requesting feedback so we can apply constructive criticism to next year’s efforts, and include some testimonials in the website article about the ways our peers participated.
11) Professional Development (Karen & Stacy):
- First faculty happy hour went great!
- There will be more events in the spring.
12) PTE Representative (Jen S):
- OT/PT Forum:
- Jen and Colin encouraged everyone to attend this event.
- This event is a great opportunity to interact with PT students to go over 2 cases.
