OTSC Meeting Agenda 1-27-14


Internal Business:

1. Meeting dates and locations for this semester:
  • Monday, January 27th at 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm in CHP 112
  • Monday, February 10th at 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm in CHP 112
  • Monday, March 24th at 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm in CHP 112
  • Monday, April 14th at 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm in CHP 112
2. Recent Events Debrief:
  • Philippines Donation Event - We sent three boxes overseas. Thank you to everyone who contributed!
  • Winter T-Shirt Sales - We have made $300+ is profits! Great job, Lori and Kristina!
  • Ugly Sweater Holiday Party - The OT House was a perfect location for the event. Great success!
  • Vegas Weekend - The event was a lot of fun for everyone. Great planning, social chairs!
3. OTSC Goals for Semester
  • The key to success this semester = forming sub-committees. Let's get to it.
  • Take initiative to form small planning groups to meet more frequently throughout the semester
4. Continue to update “Council Duties by Position”
  • Reminder: Update your  “Council Duties by Position” Google Doc throughout the year. Things you might want to include are:
  • Important dates/deadlines
  • Events related to your position
  • Names/phone numbers/email addresses of important contacts
5. International Forum - We have a new Chair, Monica. She will be organizing that festival in April.

External Business:

  • Habitat for Humanity & OTAC - Carly Wasserman (2nd year MA-II Student) came to speak about a project with OTAC and Habitat for Humanity. Carly has been working with OTAC to develop the event. We are looking for a veteran who has insurance on her/his home or is willing to buy insurance. He/she must have a low income and live in Los Angeles. We are in the process of looking for veterans who would like their homes to be retrofitted. Jen will email flyers to OTSC. Contact Carly at carlywasserman@gmail.com for more information.
    • Leah will post flyers at the VA in West LA.
    • Lori will post flyers at the VA in Long Beach.
    • Carly will get in touch with Donna in the Design and Action Committee.
  • Thesis event hosted by Rossier Student Organization (RSO) on February 27th at 7 PM in University Club Scriptorium. Contact Kayla for more information.
  • Student Health Center OT Representative - Kristy Seaver is the new representative. She spoke about activities and upcoming events planned:
    • Dietician Survey - Kristy emailed out the survey. She encouraged everyone who hasn't taken the survey, please do so as soon as possible. There is a dietician on staff. She is primarily here on Fridays. The are possible lunchtime workshop on Mondays in the future.
    • “Be Well HSC” is going to be launched on this campus. What can OT add to this web site? Wednesday, April 16 for a Kick-Off Event

Council Items:
1) AOTA (Colin & Phillip):

  • Update on Boardroom-2-Classroom: Colin is working on getting the president or vice president for February 10th. He is also figuring out the AV system with the division. This will take place after the OTSC meeting.
  • Student Centennial Commitment: Remain a member of AOTA after graduation. Take the pledge.
  • Please vote in AOTA Elections: ASD Steering Committee & General Elections
    • Voting Booth: Last year we did a Get Out the Vote campaign for both general AOTA elections and AOTA student elections. We will have an event that was successful about setting up laptops to let people vote. The elections have already begun this year. We will send out a google doc for people to sign up to cover the voting station.
      • Phillip is running for a position.
      • There are currently 2 USC students on the steering committee.
Important Events:
  • Continue brainstorming for OT Month in April: Relay for Life & Habitat for Humanity
  • Annual Conference & Expo: April 3 through April 6 in Baltimore, MD.

2) Faculty Liaison (Kristy & Jen S.):


  • Occupational Science Seminar: Second-year students taking this course have expressed that many people feel this class should have been given earlier in the sequence.  Is this a concern we should bring this up to the faculty? Are second year students more prepared to learn about OS? Should the topic of OS be introduced earlier in the process? Colin suggested that OS be introduced earlier during the summer curriculum for history.
  • 1st Faculty Meeting of the semester occurred last week.  Brought samples of fundraising products; faculty were very interested in ordering some and really liked the design and the tote bags.

3) Fundraising (Lori & Kristina):

  • T-shirt sales for Spring: Email sent out with order form. Deadline for orders: March 3, 2014
4) GSG Senator (Cindy & Casey):

  • USC is considering adding a Graduate Student Center on campus - currently brainstorming ideas
  • Intercampus transportation on the weekends - starting January 25
    • Departs UPC to HSC from JEP House at 11AM, 12PM, 1:30PM and 2:30PM
    • Departs HSC to UPC from San Pablo & Eastlake at 11:30AM, 12:30PM, 2PM and 3PM
***This is a trial month, program will only continue if it is being used, so spread the word!!!
  • Book of Mormon tickets!!! Show is Wednesday, February 12 at 8PM at the Pantages Theater
    • Lottery system will be available January 29: tickets are $20 per student, limit 2 tickets
  • HSC Movie Night at Edwards Alhambra Renaissance Stadium on Thursday, February 6
  • 6th Annual Graduate Research Symposium: deadline for Abstract submission is February 17
  • Senate Judiciary committee first meeting of the semester this Wednesday at 7 p.m. on the UPC campus - Tudor Campus Center Rm. 224.  All interested GSG members are welcome to attend.  We are working on sending a group to Washington D.C. in March to lobby on issues relating to graduate students.  Training will be provided.

5) Historian (Leila & Amanda):

  • Cohort photos have been uploaded to an album on the OTSC Trojans Facebook page. Efforts to collect photos from the year will start soon.

6) International Affairs (Monica):

  • New International Affairs Chair: Monica Stephen
  • Date?
  • Food budget?
  • Currently working on budget for food and finding speakers.
  • Any suggestions for places that will donate food? We can allocate money from the dinner budget that isn’t being used at OTSC meetings.
  • Dr. Pitts suggested meeting with the Global Initiative team in Dr. Clark’s office, led by Dr. Adley Chan and Dr. Danny Park.
7) OTAC (Alyssa & Carlos):

  • Region 2 Inter-collegiate OTAC Social Event
  • Date: Tentatively Feb 27th 5:30pm-9:00pm
  • Participants: USC, Cal State Dominguez Hills, and Westcoast University
  • Theme: Mix n’ Mingle Dodgeball (or other sport/social activity)
  • Other ideas bowling, kickball…
  • Possible Locations:
  • Athens Park Gymnasium $55/hr; 12603 S Broadway, Los Angeles 90061
  • Belvedere Community Regional Park $55/hr; 4914 E Cesar Chavez Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90022
  • Funding
  • We emailed Dr. Clark Thursday, and we are waiting to hear back.
  • Fundraiser for OTAC-PAC

Events coming up:
  • Spring Symposium - March 15-16
2 for 1 discount: If a non-member signs up with you it’s $30 off the student track OR $80 off the practitioner rate. Both attendees would pay either $29ea for student track or $119ea for practitioner rate. The non-member would also have to join OTAC. Volunteering is a great way to get involved. It’s a great way to network.
  • Thursday April 10th - Legislative Reception - Help needed if anyone is interested in AGAC (Advocacy and Government Affairs Committee)
  • May - Practice Issue forum @ Cedar Sinai
  • Potential Region 2 Town Hall in the Summer (probably June)
  • OTAC Flash is a student-run newsletter. It was started last year. This year we would like to include other universities in OTAC. We will be forming a sub-committee.

8) OT House (Allison)

  • Dr. Neville-Jan is the new faculty resident!

9) Philanthropy (Jonathan & Megan):

  • Committee request for philanthropic donation fundraising project in observation of OT Month; vote to approve funds for Relay for Life team OT4LIFE, only $10
  • UPDATE: Spring events: monthly volunteer opportunities (see Facebook and flyers or talk to Jonathan or Megan);
  • Relay for Life at USC, March 31;
  • Swim with Mike Swim-a-Thon at USC, TBD (usually mid April Fri-Sat, stay tuned!)
10) Professional Development (Karen & Stacy):

  • We will re-email the faculty with potential dates for student/faculty events. Hopefully there will be a couple student/faculty events this semester (assuming faculty sign up)! Another option is to plan one or two big events rather than so many smaller events. Kristy will ask the faculty about attendance at the faculty dinners.
11) Secretary (Leah & Laura)

  • Laura will be in class during meetings. Please fill in the agenda in detail so that Leah doesn’t miss anything during the meeting.
12) Social Chair (Kristin & Clarissa):

1) We need exam dates for the end of the year party.
  • Saturday, May 10 is the date for the event
  • The event will be at the Westin Bonaventure, which has a indoor and outdoor area.
2) Interdisciplinary Bowling Night planned by the pharmacy school
