Occupational Therapy and Science Council (OTSC)
Meeting Agenda 4-20-15
Spring Meeting #4
Welcome!
Internal Business:
1. Upcoming meeting dates for this semester:
  • None! Fall 2015 meetings TBA
2. Counterpart Check-In
  • Anything else the 1st Years need to know before this semester ends?
3. Recent Events Debrief:
  • OT Float Cohort Announcements
  • Relay for Life (March 28-29)
  • OT Extravaganza (March 28) - This year was primary care themed. Great turnout and experience.
  • Swim with Mike (April 11) - Great turn out! Soul Cycle was a popular activity this year. Next year - Let’s strive for 36 or more people going (because it will be the 36th year)! We will contact Mike about potentially coming to speak to OT students about the event.
  • International Forum (April 12) - 50+ people in attendance. Covered sensory integration around the world, among other topics. Considering potential location change for next year.
  • OT Tent at Festival of Books (April 18-19) - Stress management and sensory integration booths were very popular! All kids really enjoyed the props and materials USC provided. Multiple children and their families learned about OT and expressed an interest to request treatment. Aim for next year - More collaboration in preparing and bringing materials and setting up.
  • AOTA Conference in Nashville (April 17-19) - Very interesting topics and events: Ellen Clark-Sleagle lecture, new diversity initiative, sexuality, and primary care, among others. There were 9000 attendees this year (they were expecting 6000), and 40% were students! Next year we’ll aim to increase sessions addressing student concepts.
    • Student Conclave - outside Philadelphia, only for students. Great place to go to find out what options are out there in occupational therapy. Great way to connect with other students and get exposure to new ideas.
    • 2 programs we haven’t heard much about here at USC:
      • Boardroom to classroom- meeting with AOTA board members. Can get board of directors to have a conversation with students to address any topics we feel need more attention.
      • Student Pulse - monthly e-newsletter for AOTA student members created by the Assembly of Student Delegates.
  • End of the Year Party Ticket Sales - Sold over 200 so far. Talk to your cohort ticket sales reps for more info!
  • Remaining Merchandise Sales - Amy will talk to the CAs about mentioning merchandise to the incoming students. During the summer is a great time to sell. Great gift to buy for your CI!
5. OT Month Updates/Plans
  • Movie night? OT games? Marketing?
6. Vision for Next Year
  • More collaboration between positions. Help each other!
  • Get OTSC out there and visible.
  • Ask the new students their interests and have them help with similar topics.
  • Potentially adding a marketing position? Help getting the word out about events and OTSC. Explain that they would be collaborating with every other position. Council members voted and approved the addition of this position. We will ask a 2nd year to join and mentor the 1st year.
  • Post fliers for OTSC meetings explaining when and where meetings are and to encourage other students to attend. Make announcements in classes explaining that we have x, y, z events and we could use some help. Encourage everyone to come to the meetings!
  • Next year introduce all elected members in class to make sure the new students know who we are and what we do.
  • Vision statement - Thinking about reworking OTSC mission statement. Submit potential revisions to Maggie.
  • Push our presence on campus.
  • Have 1 event for each chair pair to plan. So there would be one event we’re really pushing each month.
  • Write large calendar in every classroom on dry erase boards with events so all students see it every day.
7. LOTA Spanish Lunch
  • Thursday April 30th at lunch in room 112
  • We will be playing our version of the original Spanish game Loteria. We have switched out the words and related them more to the health field. This is a great way for you to learn new words and practice using your Spanish. All levels of fluency are welcomed, this is a judgment free zone and a great way to acquire new words.
  • We will be providing lunch to the first 50 students who RSVP and sign up on the google doc below. If you do not make the first 50 please feel free to join and if we have extra meals you can help yourself. I hope to see you there! If you have any questions please feel free to contact Carlos Cruz at carloscr@usc.edu. Gracias and we hope to see you there!
External Business:
Council Items:
1) AOTA (Phillip & Ann):
Update
  • The AOTA Annual Conference in Nashville was a major success with the largest number of attendees ever for an AOTA conference (12,000+ attending).
  • USC was well-represented with a large number of presentations given by USC professors and students alike
  • Next year’s AOTA Annual Conference will be held in Chicago!

3) Faculty Liaison (Kristy & Doug):
Update
  • We reported the details of last month’s ‘OT Extravaganza’, provided them event information for Swim with Mike, International Forum, Festival of Books on the UPC, and encouraged them to attend any and all ‘OT Month’ events. Also, we provided them additional details about the upcoming ‘End of the Year Party’. We advised them to contact Lori or Amy if they are still interested in purchasing remaining OTSC merchandise. We’ll be emailing OT students this week to remind them to use the OTSC online suggestion box for providing us feedback and comments.
6) Historian (Leila & Heather):
Update
  • Briefly update/remind people to continue sending photos for the End of the Year Party slideshow. If you have any song requests for the video, email Leila or Heather.
7) International Affairs (Monica & Sarah):
Discussion
  • Summer OT program- looking for buddies for incoming international students who are coming to USC for the summer. Contact Dr Chan or Park if you’re interested.
  • During a meeting with Dr. Adley Chan and Jamie Park (student representative for the Global Initiatives outreach), Dr. Chan wanted to let OTSC know that the International Summer OT program is looking for local volunteers to help mentor and interact with international students. Volunteers will be able to meet international students and participate in field trips to iconic LA locations. If interested, please contact Dr. Chan at adleycha@chan.usc.edu.
  • The summer program is also accepting American students to participate in the curriculum, if you know anyone who is interested.
  • OTSC International Affairs and the Chan Global Initiatives program are collaborating on a new facebook group to promote mutual learning between American and International USC OT students and alumni. This is an outgrowth of our pilot pen pal program. Please help support the page by joining, introducing yourselves, and reaching out to others in the group! https://www.facebook.com/groups/USCChanOSOTIntl/ or by simpling typing “USC International Occupational Therapy Students” into the facebook search bar.
  • You can also “like” the USC Chan Division Global Initiatives’ facebook page for more updates on USC OT’s involvement internationally: https://www.facebook.com/USCChanOSOTGlobal?fref=ts
  • Dr. Chan and Jamie Park would like to know if it would be possible to send out invitations to join these two groups in the next mass OTSC email to our classmates?
Update
  • The International Forum took place on April 12, 2015. We had over 50 attendees, including several professors, MA I and MA II students, and alumni. Dr. Adley Chan and Dr. Danny Park spoke about the USC Global and China Initiatives, and Dr. Erna Blanche spoke about Sensory Integration around the world. Four second year MA II students also shared their international externship experiences with the audience. Afterwards, attendees socialized, ate lunch, and had the chance to look at posters that MA I students created on the topic of OT in their respective countries. A survey has been sent out to solicit feedback that can be used for next year’s forum.

8) OTAC (Carlos & Jodie):
Update
  • 2015 OTAC 39th Annual Conference. October 22-25, 2015. Hyatt Regency Sacramento & Sacramento Convention Center Sacramento, California!
  • OTAC flash will be posted around campus by the end of this week to remind students and faculty to renew their memberships!!
10) Philanthropy (Jonathan & May):
Discussion
  • Approached by Dr. Bissell about Philanthropy within the Division and doing a legacy gift. Thoughts? Would OTSC like to take this on for next year combining 2015 and 2016. All cohorts would contribute 1 gift at the end of Spring semester each year. This would be something to leave your mark. Fundraising would be from student donations. We’ll brainstorm ideas and announce to students and encourage contributions. Dr Bissell is open to work with students on logistics.
Update
  • We had a great turn out for Swim with Mike, over 18 participants and most of us got to do the triathlon together! Thank you to everyone that participated or supported this great cause.
  • Relay for Life: Although it was a smaller turnout for relay for life, those who participated mentioned that they had a lot of fun. Thank you to all those who supported!

  • The date for the upcoming App Lunch may need to change due to a conflicting PTE meeting.
  • We had a successful movie night showing Temple Grandin even though we only had two attendees.
